Sarah, Samantha and Chastity,
Here are the potential topics, with a list of resources, for your group:
- The Social History of Germanna: An examination of the social dynamics of the historical formation of Germanna -including an examination of the ethnic and racial dynamics. Resources: There is a taped lecture of Ann L. Miller delivering a talk in 2005 on the Social History of Germanna (I have a copy of this I can lend you). She would be a key resource for this line of investigation if you should choose to pursue this topic. John Fontaine's Journal would also be key as would Spotswood's papers.
- An overview of the archaeological work done at Germanna's Enchanted Castle: This topic is much more focused and many of the resources are in-house.
Resources: Doug Sanford has a number of images from the dig, and can be considered a primary resource for information, interviews, etc. Kerri Barile has written her dissertation on this topic and has also lectured about this work recently (I also have a copy of this talk). Additionally, she is currently working on an inventory of the artefacts found during this excavation.
- Alexander Spotswood: A closer look at the man who formed Germanna. Resources: As with the archaeology topic, there are a number of resources available on Spotswood that may make this choice more palatable than the social history, which is relatively unchartered territory for many of the facts are still a bit vague and inconclusive.
