Assignments for Tuesday, 2/20

Submitted by Jim Groom on Thu, 2007-02-15 16:45.
  • Museum Site Analysis: Here are the assignments to be accomplished by next Tuesday, 2/20:Find and analyze three different museum websites (an art gallery, a historic site, and a science museum) that you think present their collection to the public, using the virtual space, in an effective manner. This analysis should be at least three pages and should be posted to your blog by Tuesday, 2/20 at 2:00 pm. This will be a graded assignment, so feel free to contact me with additional questions. Here are some questions I would ask you to consider in-depth:
    • What does the museum's collection consist of?
    • How do they present their collection to the public?
    • Why, in your opinion, is this site effective?
    • What choices has the museum made that you agree with?
    • Are there certain things you would do differently? If so -how?
    • How does this museum integrate the public into their virtual space? Are their interactive exhibits? Individual spaces? Forums? A blog? Etc.

  • Mash-ups: Locate at least two mash-ups online and discuss how they are bringing disparate web services together in order to create unique, useful tools online. If you can find museum mash-ups (there are a number of them out in the ether) that would be great, but feel free to explore how universities, companies, and other agencies are using these relatively new tools. Report on your mash-ups by Thursday, 2/22. Please post this to your blog.

  • Playing with Wordpress: Finally, I would like each of you to spend some time playing with your WordPress site over the next four or five days. I would like to see evidence that you have tried to create pages, create posts, designed a rudimentary navigation system, and tried to upload images and write text. A number of you will be spending time at the technology session tomorrow, 2/16, from 2-4, but I would also like the rest of you to experiment and post any questions you might have to the Class Forums that I have recently created. Post any questions you have here and I, or some one else in the class who has worked through these issues while playing with WordPress, will respond to your question. If you are not posting on the forum, I will have to assume you are not playing with WordPress, for there is both a lot to learn and a lot to share! This will be an on-going assignment, but I would like to see everyone aprticpate over the next five days.
